June  2016

After much discussion, gerrymandering and infighting, and with a nod to the referendum, the committee have agreed to throw the decision as to whether the club remains in the Hampshire Cricket League open to public vote.  The Lexit campaign insist the club would be in far better shape if we played among ourselves, imposed stricter controls over new members wishing to join the club, issue of membership cards with photo ID and introduce some form of hierarchal system in which the longest serving members get first dibs in the showers.  Money saved from League subscriptions and official league balls could be reinvested in the club, while the remain camp speak of the benefit of competitive cricket, continued growth of the club and attending to the largesse of the Hampshire Cricket League from within.

Others have drawn inspiration from Boutros Boutros Ghali and propose a compromise deal of joining an alternative cricket league, possibly Lancashire, possibly Yorkshire.

Longparish I

Longparish dismissed Rowledge II for an under par 174 with Alex Coetzee and Sam Trinder taking 2 wickets each and Matt Jackman 3 for 38. William de Cani hit an unbeaten 111 as Longparish chased down the target with 15 overs remaining.

After a long drive and extensive delays at passport control Longparish arrived at Hayling Island only for the heavens to open and the game abandoned.

Against an Old Basing side featuring former Hampshire and England spinner Shaun Udal, Alex Coetzee struck 51 and U15 William Samways 73 as Longparish closed on 239 for 8. Harry Martin picked up the key wicket of Udal and Ben Gardner and Matt Jackman took 3 wickets each to secure a 138 run win.

At Bedhampton Matt Jackman's good form with the ball continued as he took 4 for 29 as the home side were dismissed for 189. Billy Mead hit 47 and Michael Taplin 30 in the Longparish reply that passed the target with 7 overs and 4 wickets remaining.

Longparish II

Successive games against Amport II and Sherfield on Loddon were lost to the elements but against near neighbours St Mary Bourne, Jamie Blackmore hit 40 and Adam Seidman 53 as Longparish II closed on 200 for 9. Alex Brinton took 4 for 35 and Harry Samways 4 for 41 to complete a 19 run win for Longparish II.

The home tie with Donnington proved to be a tremendously exciting affair. Longparish II were dismissed for 143 with Callum Giles the principle contributor with 58,  Harry Samways took 2 for 23 and Barry Blackmore 4 for 13 but with the last man at the crease Donnington scored a run off the final ball of the innings to tie the match.

The away game at Ropley Ii was only marginally less exciting. On a tricky track the home side closed on 165 for 6. At 45 for 5 the game seemed to be up for Longparish II but 60 from Justin Jackman turned the game around and with last man Alex Brinton at the crease Chris Clarke hit the winning runs off the penultimate ball of the match to secure a 1 wicket win.

Longparish III

Martin Bearpark hit 67 and Dan Pomroy 28 as Longparish III set St Cross V a target of 176, Cameron Proctor took 2 for 36 and Christian Dawson 4 for 24 to complete a 25 run win.

At home to Colden Common Longparish III batted brilliantly and posted 241 for 7 with Will Arnold striking 71 and James Whiting 89. Nathan Smith and Martin Hanham picked up 3 wickets each as Colden Common were all out 59 runs short of the target.

Away at AWE Tadley Longparish III again batted well to grind out 151 for 6 with Barry Ewens the top scorer with 38. James Young took 3 for 24 and Nathan Smith 4 for 16 to terminate the Tadley reply with the score on 67.

Skipper Martin Bearpark struck a brilliant 115 at home to Holybourne II and Christian Dawson took 4 for 10 in a 111 run win for Longparish III.

Longparish Midweek 20/20

Longparish remain in the Tichborne Trophy after a convincing win over Wessex, and are in the hunt for the top division title after a 3 run win over Tichborne Park and a narrow defeat to Easton & Martyr Worthy.

Longparish U15

In the cup game against Fair Oak, William Samways hit an unbeaten 52 and Jordan Blackmore 36 as Longparish U15 closed on 141 for 4, Tally O'Farrell, Alex Bundy and Jordan Blackmore all picked up wickets as the Fair Oak innings ended 49 runs short.

The game against Amport U15 was lost to the rain, which was a shame as the Colts season is a short one.

Longparish U15 remain unbeaten after a 57 run win over Otterbourne in which William Samways hit an unbeaten 30 and Jordan Blackmore 31, and Alex Bundy, Tally O'Farrell, Oliver Buck, Bailey Sampson-Bridgen and Liam Whitehorn all picked up wickets.

Longparish U13

Against Bishops Waltham, Oliver Wills and Ben Wills both struck 30 as Longparish U13 closed on 136 for 4 from their 20 overs. William McDermott and Louis Pereira picked up 2 wickets each and Harvey Randall took 3 for 18 as Longparish U13 dismissed Bishops Waltham for 66

In a tough away tie at Twyford, Oliver Buck, Archie Birtles, Keiron McHenry and Ben Arnold took wickets and Ben Arnold scored runs but could not prevent Longparish U13 recording only their second league defeat of the season.

The cup pitched Longparish U13 against a super strong Hursley Park U13 side. Alfie Smith and Harvey Randall picked up wickets and Ben Arnold's struck runs but to no avail as Hursley Park U13 moved through to the next round.

Longparish U11

Away at Trojans in the cup, Cameron Wigmore and Kieron Tasker picked up wickets and Zac Allen hit an unbeaten 27 in a narrow 5 run defeat.

Games against Hedge End U11, Broughton U11 and Bishops Waltham U11 were all lost to the weather (see note above about length of Colts cricket season) and in the league game with Andover U11, Cian Perrett, Cameron Wigmore, Finn Janaway and Zac Allen picked up wickets and Alfie Smith, Finn Janaway, Joe Fish, Wilf Hillier and Harry Randall scored runs but could not prevent another narrow defeat.

Longparish Friendly/Sunday

Fixture list abridged, principally due to player availability and the exam season, The Pedagogues six a side tournament on bank holiday Monday was enjoyed by all who attended, and the Longparish side gave of their best in the face of stiff opposition. Sunday fixtures resume later this month Thanks to Ray Smith for organising the Sunday fixture list.

Injury List

The doofus who does the outfield:   lumbago - (insect bite on the mend)

Warren Bonathan:   sore leg still

George Kousseff:   ruptured achilles downgraded to sore heel possibly a blister

Otis:   infected hair follicle on foot

To all of the above, on behalf of everyone at the club, get well soon.

The Ground

Currently it is possible to see the grass growing, and the cow's appearance in the surrounding meadow can't come soon enough as there may well be several U11s still out there in the long grass looking for a ball from last Sunday. Thank you to Mrs Jackman for once again bringing colour to the facade of the pavilion with pretty flowers in boxes and also to those who dedicate so many hours to conquering the forces of grass that would consume us all should the blades cease to turn.

Hundred Club Draw - June

For the second month in succession Hundred Club Winners have been generated at the edge of space  using the miracle of digital technology. A proposal is also on the table for the prizes to be paid in Bitcoin, Postal Order or Cosmic Cash dependant on what is available at the Post Office.

The British Museum are very keen to use the tumbly drum with wooden balls thing as part of their "Marvels of the Middle Ages" exhibition, where it will form part of the frontispiece alongside a treadwheel crane, trebuchet and further siege engines

This month's winners listed below using a font developed by Major Tim Peake himself.

By the way, If anyone has any jobs they would like Tim to do don't be a stranger. Weather or traffic news before travelling to a game, selfie with some space junk, or even a load of ironing ( I believe Yodel deliver to most places ) he'll be glad of the gig. We are paying his fare.

Drop him a line, he's all over Facespace Histogram and Totter and likes a chat.
