Longparish CC tour of Devon a huge success

16 Sep 2010

The Longparish CC tour of Devon proved to be a huge success with exciting games against Uplyme, Seaton and social events that passed in a blur (for some anyway)
The Keenest arrived early on Friday, several appeared on Saturday morning, some even stayed for the week in this pretty corner of Devon, that, for this weekend, was bathed in sunshine.
Assembling at Uplyme, Longparish batted first and soon came to terms with a green track as Alex Coetzee and William de Cani put on 101 for the first wicket. A few wickets fell and Gary Taplin clubbed some huge sixes off some slow bowling as Longparish posted 189. Uplyme lost wickets at regular intervals, and were grateful for the yips/shakes that affected Warren "the wide’s" bowling. Post match drinks were taken in the club bar before everyone departed to prepare for the night in Seaton. Some to hotels, some to B&Bs others to a camp site where a spirited group of youngsters mistakenly showered in the ladies shower block. Following a five minute conversation about the merits of various awnings with a fifty year old lady, who was too polite/pleased to tell them they were in the wrong block, She boldly informed that she would be sleeping in the awning that night and not in the caravan as per norm, Non plussed, the boys departed to play frisbee, the lady to her tent, to oil and prepare for the evening's exertions

A group formed in The George, Pool was played, the Quiz machine conquered and a late night game of killer on the Dartboard went right to the wire with Neil and Georgina Bonathon battling it out into the early hours.

Chips and kebabs were taken, and while some climbed the sunshine mountain up into the sky, others headed for clubland. Matthew made friends in the middle of the night and James and Warren threw some shapes in a seaside establishment named The Grove.

Sunday morning and some hit the golf course, some went fishing, others finally went to bed before meeting up at Seaton for the final game of cricket. Longparish batted first and Alex Coetzee carried on where he left off the day before, narrowly missing out on back to back fifties as he fell on 49, Matt Jackman score 40,Martin Bearpark hit 50 and Paul Blackmore hit a huge six somewhere over Sidmouth as Longparish finished on 210. A magnificent tea followed in the impressive Seaton clubhouse before Longparish returned to the field. Seaton started well but were pulled up short by some rapid bowling from Brad Aldridge who took 2 for 4 in his 3 over spell. Chris de Cani was asked to bowl and was hit to most parts of the town, conceding 51 from his 6 over spell. Seaton batted well in the closing overs scoring at 8 an over to clinch victory with a few balls to spare.

Thanks to Uplyme and Lyme Regis CC and Seaton CC for hosting the cricket, and what proved to be a hugely entertaining and enjoyable weekend.
