July  2017

It all started on the first day of the month (as is the way of months) and ended thirty days later (as is the way of some months if not all).

Well that's June dealt with

Socrates (the philosopher not the Brazilian playmaker) famously once said

Dedication, Dedication, Dedication, that's what you need

If you want to be the best

If you want to beat the rest

Dedication's what you need

A mantra that Longparish have stuck to throughout the previously described month with tough games for all sides so we thank Socrates for that.

Longparish 1st XI

The month started badly for Longparish with an abject performance at home to Shrewton who lost the toss and were invited to field in high heat, which they did rather well dismissing Longparish for 98 in 24.4 overs. A target that Shrewton passed in the 14th over for the loss of 3 wickets.

Away at high flying Ropley the following week where Michael Taplin hit 55, Ben Gardner 33 and Jonnie Wahid 44 as Longparish closed on 225 for 7. Jack Levy and Tom Trinder took 3 wickets each as the Ropley innings closed 84 runs short of the target.

Sixth v Fourth next as Longparish entertained Bishops Waltham who batted first and made 154 in 48.2 overs. Paul Blackmore scored 35 and William de Cani an unbeaten 101 as Longparish passed the target in the 19th over.

Longparish currently lie 5th in the top division of the Hampshire League.

Longparish 2nd XI

Also experienced a poor start to the month as they were dismissed for 103 at Ramsdell with Dan Bearpark the principle contributor with 37. Ollie Coetzee picked up a wicket as the home side cruised to a 9 wicket win.

It was a different story at home to Old Basing II who were all out for 139 with Callum Giles taking 4 for 21 and Barry Blackmore 4 for 26. Sam Trinder, 29 and Dan Bearpark, 32 put on fifty something for the first wicket and Justin Jackman was unbeaten on 28 in a 6 wicket win for Longparish II.

It was a low scoring affair away at Overton, who batted first and closed on 94 with Oliver Coetzee and Chris Clarke taking two wickets each and Barry Blackmore 4 for 6. Ollie Coetzee was the only Longparish bat who made it to double figures in a reply that fell 34 runs short of the target.

Longparish II  sit 10th in the 4th tier of the Hampshire League.

Longparish 3rd XI

Began the month with a heavy defeat in the derby with St Marybourne.

Will Arnold's fine form with the bat continued at Farley and Rory Kerr added 29 as Longparish III posted 151 for 9 from their 42 overs. Nathan Smith and Jordan Blackmore bagged 3 wickets each to complete a 65 run win.

Away at Wilton Christian Dawson took 6 for 34 as the home side closed on 213. Rory Kerr thumped 56, Dan Pomroy 30, Gary Taplin 27 and George Kousseff an unbeaten 76 in an 8 wicket win for Longparish III.

Down the road at Winterbourne it was a different story, bar George Kousseff top scoring although this time with 24 as Longparish III closed on 93 for 9. Nathan Smith bagged 3 wickets as Winterbourne secured a 7 wicket win with a few overs to spare.

Longparish III currently occupy 8th spot in the 6th tier of the Hampshire League (there are many tiers, it's a very big league)

Midweek 20/20

Longparish moved through to the semi finals of The Tichborne Trophy with a 41 run win over Ropley in which Michael  Taplin scored and Chris Clarke bagged a brace of wickets. Longparish now face Tichborne Trophy Patrons - SPL side Tichborne Park at home on Monday 10th July at 6.15pm. League form has been mixed but Longparish currently cling on to their top division status

Thomas Parker, James Newman, Oliver Keefe, Wilf Hillier and Jake Blunden all chipped in with wickets but could not prevent Hursley Park sneaking a 4 wicket win with 2 balls remaining.

Longparish U11 impressed away at Twyford as they batted first and posted 142 for 5 with Alfie Smith scoring 32, Jude Cooper-Smith 19 and Oliver Oram 21,Harry and Harvey Randell bowled beautifully as did Kieron Tasker and Henry Harris-Mallet was in the wickets as Longparish U11 triumphed by 29 runs.

Longparish U15

Things didn't go well against a strong Sparsholt U15 side who dismissed Longparish U15 for 55. Longparish U15 responded well in the field and made Sparsholt fight hard for their win. In the Cup quarter final at Ropley U15 , Tally O'Farrell and Jack Proctor impressed with the ball and Louis Pereira and Luke Benzing picked up wickets as Ropley closed on 136 from their 20 overs. In reply Luke Benzing hit 17 at the top of the order and Oliver Oram was unbeaten on 30 in an innings that was terminated 37 runs shy of the target.

In the league match at Amport U15, William McDermott took 2 for 9 and Luke Benzing 4 for 21 as the home side set Longparish U11 a target of 76 for victory. An unbeaten 30 from  Luke Benzing was the principle contribution to the Longparish reply that passed the target in the 15th over.

Presentation Day

Here ye! Here ye! Here ye!

The day for the ceremonial giving of gongs for all those involved in senior cricket during the past twelve months has been set as Friday 15th September and will once again be kindly hosted by The Cricketers Inn. Further details to follow.

Thatchwatch - Live!

A Mr B Oddie has been in touch with a time lapse video taken earlier this year of a bird building a nest in a tree in his garden.  On first viewing the technique seems fairly simple and could quite easily be adapted to making a thatch roof. With this in mind there is now a collection point by the back of the pavilion kitchen door for twigs, straw and horse hair.

Armed with Oddie's video and the steady collection of raw material we can thatch this roof for free and the dream of media centre replete with a fridge full of cold cuts and beer and an underground car park furnished with fountain and requisite nymphs remain firmly alive.

Ground

Is dry, parched, but playing well. Well done to everyone who has slaved under the sun in order to make cricket happen at Longparish.

Match Ball Sponsors

Thanks again to all who have sponsored match balls this summer. Match ball sponsors continue to be sourced as the modern game dictates that the ball must be hit a long way inevitably into the long grass.  A match ball costs £15, if you would like to sponsor a match ball don't be stranger as we have lost a lot of balls this summer.

Hundred Club Draw - June

Thank you to everyone who wrote in with their font of first choice to herald the winners of this month's hundred club draw.

A Velma Dinkley of Hanna-Barbera  writes:

There are several fonts that stir happy memories of my time with Shaggy and Scoob. The responsibility of being  the last line of defence in the fight against dastardly doings and the knowledge that, but for us kids, they would have gotten clean away with it, weighed heavy at times. In dark moments I am reminded of frightening fonts , and melancholy inevitably strikes when I am reminded of the times when I was detailed to go with Shaggy and Scoob while Fred and Daphne sought time alone.

Oh Fred we could have been so good together.

It wasn't a happy show and Daphne and I never really got on. I'm not bitter about it but I know that if declare that my favourite font is the one used on the side of the Mystery Machine it will niggle dear old Daphers, so "Ar Christy" it is,

In your face Daphne, Ha!

Errrr "Ar Christy" it is Velma but take a lead from Idina Menzel and Let it go

£35  Conal Proctor     £15   Graham Darrah        £15   Anne Hammond

If anyone out there (Hanna Barbera employee or not)  has a font that they are fond of with an accompanying tale that they would like to see used to display the Hundred Club winners, please send a postcard to:  Fonts I am fond of, Stable Cottage, Bransbury, Winchester SO21 2QJ.
