South Wilts IV v Longparish Cricket Club Longparish 2nd XI on Sat 08 May 2010 at
Longparish Cricket Club Lost 7 wickets
Match report
A Wallace and Grommit feel to the opening day of the season for newly promoted Longparish II. “A Grand Day out” for some, liberated from the shackles of weekend household chores. "A Close Shave" for many, on the spaghetti of the Salisbury ring road and, for one particular Longparish Cricketer, “The wrong trousers” and a late arrival to the ground.
In bleak conditions Justin Jackman lost the toss and Longparish were asked to bat. On a sporting wicket early wickets tumbled, mostly to South Wilts opening seamer Mahmood, as Longparish slumped to 20 odd for 5. Warren Bonathon batted sensibly in partnership with Clive Burnard who briefly threatened to topple the steeple of the neighbouring Anglican abode with a spectacular straight drive. Burnard was dismissed for a patient 20 with Bonathon batting superbly on to an unbeaten 42 as Longparish closed on 107 for 9.
A little light of bowling, Longparish II briefly threatened to run through the South Wilts IV batting line up. Brad Aldridge and James Young bowled magnificently, with Young picking up 2 wickets and Aldridge drawing a string of half chances that, on a day not bearing “the curse of the were rabbit” would have produced wickets. William de Cani bowled 5 overs of economical spin, and Captain Jackman introduced himself to the bowling attack towards the end to aid his climb up the fantasy cricket league, a ploy that produced a wicket with his first ball. Hanniford hit an impressive 51 as South Wilts IV secured victory by 7 wickets.
